Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir is set to appear for an interview for the men’s cricket team head coach position in Mumbai with BCCI secretary Jay Shah and other officials on Tuesday, according to reports.

Gambhir’s Interview Details

Gautam Gambhir, often referred to as “Gauti,” is expected to travel to Mumbai around 12 pm today for the interview at the BCCI Headquarters. A source privy to the BCCI has indicated that Gambhir is the frontrunner for the position, as the BCCI has already agreed to the terms he presented for the role.

“The new head coach of the men’s cricket team will soon be revealed. The meeting is scheduled between 2-4 pm,” said the source.

Gambhir’s Demands

Gambhir has made several demands for the head coach position, including full command over the team and separate squads for white-ball and red-ball cricket. The BCCI has reportedly accepted these terms and is keen to appoint him as the next head coach.

BCCI’s Call for Applications

The BCCI had officially invited applications for the head coach position, with a deadline set for May 27. The job description specifies that the new head coach will be responsible for all three formats of the game from July 2024 until December 2027.

Rahul Dravid’s Tenure

The current head coach, Rahul Dravid, began his tenure after the 2021 T20 World Cup. Initially set to end with the 2023 ODI World Cup, Dravid’s contract was extended until the conclusion of the T20 World Cup this year.

Gambhir’s Vision for Coaching

During a recent event, Gautam Gambhir expressed his enthusiasm for coaching the Indian team, stating, “There is no bigger honour than coaching the national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well.”

Gambhir has an impressive cricketing resume, being part of India’s victorious squads in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. His experience and passion for the game make him a strong candidate for the head coach position.

Conclusion

With the BCCI seemingly aligned with Gambhir’s vision for the team and his imminent interview, it appears likely that Gambhir will soon be announced as the next head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. The official announcement is expected following the meeting today.
